How Our Program Works

Theory of Change:
Improve Teaching to Grow Students

IF we provide high quality professional development focused on evidence-based literacy practices to teachers who put that training to action

THEN we will increase teacher effectiveness and students’ reading proficiency!

Research consistently shows teachers are the single most important in-school factor in student achievement often cited with studies by John Hattie and the National Center for Education Statistics. The RAND Corporation highlights teacher quality critical for student learning gains. That’s why Catch Up & Read partners and collaborates with districts to coach and build teacher capacity.

What Makes Our Program Unique

Teachers

Campus teachers are employed to implement our after-school tutoring program. They receive around 100 hours of professional development offered virtually or in-person. Skills covered include data-driven instruction, phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, oral reading fluency, and comprehension.

Catch Up & Read teachers deploy new skills in their classrooms, share best practices with their colleagues, and enjoy additional leadership opportunities. This multiplies our impact campus-wide.

Tutoring

After-school tutoring connects 1st–3rd grade students with the greatest need for effective intervention to Catch Up & Read’s highly trained teachers. Each teacher works with a small group of students while receiving ongoing coaching and support from Catch Up & Read staff.

Students receive approximately 70 hours of teacher-directed intervention, 100% of Catch Up & Read students demonstrated growth on i-Ready, MAP, and mCLASS, and 94% of CAR students moved at least one domain. Tutoring is provided in both Spanish and English and offered at school.
